If the United Kingdom is truely united, why are there four seperate countries?

because the four countries are under one rule

Because before they were all united, there were more than four-there were dozens of little kingdoms all over Great Britain. When they all became united under one government, it seemed logical to call it the "United Kingdom."

when england annexed scotland and wales it was known as a united nation of separate kingdoms. they wanted to annex ireland, too.
