There's a program out there called DBAN (which stands for Derek's Boot And Nuke or something like that), it's what we use to erase hard drives at the local college when we are disposing of old computers and it completely gets rid of everything. If you want to be thorough, I would suggest looking that up (it will require that you make a bootable floppy). Once you have your floppy, just boot to the floppy drive and it's pretty self explanatory from there. Make sure you have everything you need before you use the program though because there's no getting it back.

Formatting alone won't do the trick. You'll feel much safer if you securely erase the disk - use something like Active@ KillDisk or Darik's Boot N Nuke, these programs overwrite the entire hard disk multiple times to ensure that no data can be recovered, sometimes to DoD standards.

Format, or even better zero-fill, macs have some kinfa thing where it randonly fills the drive 8 times..

on another computer install partition magic 8
plug HDD you wanna let go to this computer
( when it power is off )
after boot , run partition magic
choose "clean and safe erease partition" for each partition when
deleting partitions.
