Does anyone know how to save checkpoints on the PS2 game Black?

Every time I go back to the start of the game and not to the checkpoints where I left the game, I played for 1 hour the other day to find today I was back where i started. HELP

It's impossible to save at checkpoints. I have a PS2 too. And i have discovered that. It's really annoying.
