Scientists are finding more and more genes that are related to behavior and physical traits.

If money wasn't the issue would you consider your to be child be scan for traits and would you pick what traits your child should have?

Like blue eyes, intelligence etc.

I read on the net that a couple actually wanted a child who was deaf. Being deaf themshelves they thought it was okay for the child to be that way as they thought that was normal.

No... not a chance. Ever seen 'The Island' or 'Gattica'? This type of control has the potential to lead to situations like those... I don't think we are responsible enough as a species to mess too much with the roulette wheel of genetics.

Said in that manner “Would you shop for your future child like you shop for food?”
The Question gives an automatic negative connotation to gene/trait selection.

And.. lets face it.. When someone hears gene/trait selection- they start thinking of goose stepping Nazi’s and a Superior Race. – Always a touchy thing.

So, it’s very easy to say no to this one.- Until you look at it a little bit closer.

Ignoring appearance for appearance sake alone- “physical traits” also takes into account health traits.

If there was a trait/history in your family of blindness, deafness, childhood arthritis, deformities, brittle bone disease – Or a disease that could cause constant pain to your child.
Are you saying you would NOT choose to give the child a healthy life? You would rather your child have the possibility of missing limbs? Constant pain? Blindness?

I don’t think I could be so quick to turn this option down.
Blue eyes/blonde hair.. I could care less – but a Physically healthy child that would not have pain of a certain disease or illness. I believe I would want that for my child.

No I just don't think the design of people and our children should be based on human technology.

If we were to allow people to choose their childrens traits to make the perfect person... evreyone would keep trying and trying to get the "perfect" child... and then it would all be a huge contest to see who can have the best baby. There is enough of that already. Might as well just leave it up to chance.

I would hope people would not choose physical traits, but health traits. If you could guarantee your child would not be susceptible to an illness such as leukemia, you would choose that health trait.
