Blood is created in the red bone marow that exists in the center of certain bones in your body (like the hip bone) There is a complicated combination of hormones that are created when your body experiences a special need for cells (Erythropoietin stimulates bone marrow to produce red cells). These hormones act on differentiated stem cells and tell them which types of cells to produce and the amount of the hormone correlates with how much to make. Some types of cells then go through a maturation process (platelets form from really big cells called megakaryocytes that break down to form platelets) while others are just released into the peripheral blood.
