The process used is pretty complicated. I think a crude sugar could be made by extracting the juice and boiling it down...but to get real granular sugar would be tough at home.

You can't at home. I worked for a large sugar mill in the Northwest and it would be impossible for you to make sugar in the sense, the way it's made. You could grind it I suppose but you'd never get the degree of "sugar" in it.

There are to many processes in it and to many degrees of safety and chemical mixing to extract the "sugar"
