It's because they hate themselves so much inside that they feel it necessary to belittle and make you have yourself too.

Some find the cruel joys in watching others be miserable. One day they'll say the wrong things and piss off the wrong person and they will be sorry they did! They do it because that's they're way of being a bully without actually doing it so they can get away with it. It's just plain mean and wrong and should not be tolerated period.
IF it's any comfort, just know that what goes around comes around. If it doesn't happen fast enough for you, I'm sure human resources could make it happen. Most companies don't put up with that nonsense nowadays.

Some people have nothing better to do with their lives or their time than to cause chaos and and disruption in other peoples lives. They are so unhappy that they purposely set out to make others around them unhappy no matter the price. Kill them with kindness, when some one is mean look them dead in the eye and smile and tell them to have a nice day. It may irk them more but you planted a positive seed.

I feel your pain. Are you sure we dont work in the same office?
I think its their insecure way of trying to keep people with real talent down. Unprofessional, mediocre employees sometimes do this to get rid of those they see as a threat.
This may sound sexist and general but I have noticed its primarily middle aged and older women who play this way

You know, you probably feel like you just want to throw in the towel, throw them a finger, and tell them to get lost. However, if I were you, I would sit back in my chair, put my hands behind the back of my head, and smile. Why? Because you are not like these people. You are not selfish, jealous, nor insecure! Congratulations on being a better person :)

You are describing the behaviour of those who don't feel good about their own lives. People who are happy in life and satisfied with their choices and accomplishements can be happy for others. When people feel bad about their own lives it makes them unhappy to see others succeed leaving them behind in the dust. They will try to pull others down and keep them down rather than lift themselves up. It's lazier and the easiest way to keep and even playing field. Heaven forbid people should get off their butts and achieve their dreams.

so you're having problems are work, that sucks. people do it because they're trying to work out past issues, past frustrations, they think they can take it out on you. we all like to be aggressive, you might tell them youre on to them adn suggest they find a more appropriate aggressive outlet.
