I agree with everyone so far.
It can be good if it's planned. One of my friends' family made a family decision to adopt a dog for Christmas and so it wasn't on impulse.
Many people give pets as complete surprises; which is totally wrong. For one, the person might not be able to afford its expenses. Another thing is that many people (me included) like to pick out the animals they buy. To have one chosen for you is like having someone choose your friends for you.
Plus sometimes people think giving puppies or kitties is really cute and don't realize that these animals are very willing and capable to turn your furniture and/or belongings into their playthings. =)
Impulse pet buying = big no-no.

This is a bad idea, I agree with you completely on that! Picking out a pet should be a personal experience, you should find that you bond with the animal BEFORE buying it or rescuing it from the shelter, not after. Not only that, but different people do better with certain types of animals.
Do you know for sure the person you are giving a long haired cat to wants one? What if they are allergic? What if their boyfriend or girlfriend is? Does the owner of the apartment or home they rent allow cats? So many things need to be taken into consideration when buying somebody else a pet.
When it comes to dogs, you have to know the breed a person likes, and if that breed works with their lifestyle and personality. Do they mind doing a lot of grooming? Can they walk the very active dog you bought for them six times a day like it would want them to? There are simply too many variables for this to be a smart idea.

I think it depends on the animal and the person you are giving it to. A pet is a lifelong commitment and an impulsive acquisition almost always leads to one side being unhappy. My parents got me my first dog when I was 8 as a Christmas present. It was the ONLY thing I wanted. Meatball lived to be 18 and was my best friend. I never tired of him. So, I think it depends on the person.

its ok if the person getting the animal had been intending to get one for a while... i wouldnt recomend it for young children and never give one as a surprise., christmas probally isnt a good time cos people are all excited with presents then get tired of them. Whats probally best is getting the things you need for an animal at christmas(e.g.haster cage for hamster, dog bed...) and then get the animal after christmas once thing calm down

I deny people that want to adopt an animal as a gift. Our rule is all adults that live in the home have to agree on getting a new animal and all the adults have to meet it before bringing it home.

I think its a bad idea too. The person might not want to take care of the animal or may not have enough time to spend with it.

yes it is a very bad idea, some people can't put up with pets, or don't want them. especially if you don't knoiw what the person is suited to, e.g. if you got them a dog they might not have time to take it for walks.
yes especially if it is a wild animal, although i don't really think people would do that.

Bad idea unless you know the person really well and know that they want that specific animal. You shouldn't give a great dane to someone who really wants a chichihua just because you know they like dogs.
