My kitchen sink refuses to drain and also fills up with water when the washing machine is draining or on spin. There is a pipe located underneath the sink which has a capped end on it and if you release the cap air rushes out and the water tends to drain away. However it is no longer doing this.
I've had the pipes checked and the water board has been to check the main outside drain but there appears to be no probs.
My washing machine is syphoning water back and could be causing this problem or is it something else?

I have unblocked the u-bend and the washing machine is not connected to anything other than the cold water pipe.

The washing machine is pumping out water at a very fast rate and when the plumbing pipes are a little bit restricted the pipes can not handel the water flow.Every time you wash lint gets into your drain unless you have some type of lint filter.Your kitchen sink and your laundry drain are runing into the same main drain .A little bit a grease and a litlle bit of lint will restrict the flow of water.I think its time to rent a snake and clean that drain,Good luck

If this is a new machine and just recently been installed or altered in any way, make sure that the waste water outlet pipe from the machine is connected higher than the u bend for your sink because water will find it's own level, or you could have a blockage in the waste pipe below your u bend ie. a sock or anything, the other blanked off connection is for another appliance ie. dish-washer etc.

the answers about cleaning your pipes out are true. but it also sounds like you need a plumber to see if your drain pipes are vented or not. the capped pipe is the clue. there is more than one way to vent the drains in your house. either connect them to the stack pipe that goes up through your roof or a special stand pipe that has a flapper vent cap on it the flapper vent could be added to the drain pipe on the washer and should do the trick.

I had the same problem and it was a blockage in the pipework. I had to get it blown out by a Drain Company.

if your washer connects to your u-bend this may cause a problem you need a seperate outlet for your washer or you could take the u-bend off and check for blockages. hope this helps

If you know how to remove the u-bend then do it - it may be full of muck. REMEMBER: if you do unscrew it, put a bowl under it or water and **** will go all over the floor!
