Your lost rat could well still turn up! one of ours has got under a cupboard n not come out for 3 days before so dont give up yet. As for introducing a new rat to the other one it should be fine. they should be the same sex. try cleaning the cage and putting new bedding in fitrst so that everything feels neutral to both of them. good luck.

I put a new rat in with my rat and they got on fine- BUT the new rat was a baby male and the old rat was very docile & female. It depends on their personality.

I'd probably keep them in adjoining cages for a couple of weeks so they can get a sniff of each other first then introduce them gently.

Here's a good guide: http://ratguide.com/care/behavior/introducing_rats.php

I have 2 rats and just recently had to introduce them, make sure you do it on neutral grounds like a bed or the play area.
Also remember that you new rat should go through quarantine so that it doesn't make the other rats sick.

Hope this helps

you have to be very very careful about introducing a new rat. What if your lost one turns up? I have 2 brothers who have always lived together. They are in a massive cage and yet they still have the odd spat.

Rats are very social creatures. There should be no problem introducing new ones. I'm sure the other will appear pretty quick as soon as it realises it needs food and water (though they can go longer than a camel without water)

You seem to have answered your own question. Rats are social creatures, so introducing a new rat into an established colony should go without a hitch.

I never had an issues introducing a new rat to my existing ones. In fact it seemed like they enjoyed each others company.

Sorry about you losing your pet.

Make a comfy nest box, put it in a cage and leave the door open, put some food plus wet cat food and water in the cage and wait. Eventually you'll be able to close the door with him inside. They can't resist cat or dog food!

I failed to introduce a new young male to an existing adult male. They fought like mad.
