When you go to START ->SHUTDOWN you should see three options; Restart, Shutdown, and Sleep (which if you hold shift turns into Hibernate.)

So, is Shutdown missing from the screen? What is possible is that you accidently hit Log Off, which will bring up two options; Switch User and Log Off.

Could you explain what is on the screen in detail so that we can give you a better analysis?

Do what he^^^ said, just hold down the power button on the tower for approx. ten seconds, your computer will turn off safely. Turn it back on and see what happens. If for some God -forsaken reason that doesn't work, just unplug the computer, windows XP can handle that kind of power loss without damaging anything.

Open the start menu, and click run, after clicking run type cmd into the text box there.

In the command prompt that appears, type shutdown -s and that will start the shutdown with a 1 minute timer.

Then just walk away!

Just hold down the power button on your computer until your computer turns off. Turn it back on, let it scan for errors on your hard drive, and try it again.
