Of course a janitor can. Being wealthy is about managing your money well. I have a family friend who's father helped put his 4 kids through college and owns a nice house. He is a janitor and his wife is a grade school teacher. He has an appreciation for cleanliness, organization and managing money and has owned his own janitorial business.

He is busy but efficient. He volunteers at his church and while they were young, found time to spend with his children.

Stepping back from the specifics a bit though, I know how he does it. He has a steady income in a job that he enjoys and can do well (that makes you stick with it) and he saves and makes moderate-growth investments. He could be a janitor, a cook, a lawyer, a doctor or whatever. It is about living within your means and liviing a lifestyle where you set aside money.

There are many true acounts of janitors dying and leaving milions of dollars to charity or their kids so, of course, it can be done. NOT if you don't save at least 10% of your income faithfully. Also, search Yahoo or Google and look for 1-800-Gotjunk! The multimillionaire owner started out with a $700 used truck during college and picked up trash. Left college already rich and employed his college buddies. A janitor who just lives month-to-month without looking beyond his walls will stay that way. A great janitor makes friends with tenants in building/office, takes on second locations, always smiles, always ensures that people remember his name. When he gets a tip or bonus due to this attitude and great work ethic, he does not spend it, he saves it as it is "extra" from his budgeted income. My cousin left a position as bank manager when he got fed up with the stress, became a school janitor, added yard maintenance services and he has a gorgeous home in a resort town, no stress, great wife, great life!

If you invest in something that suddenly becomes incredibly popular you could.

Anyone who worked for Wal-Mart in the beginning - 1980 and took out stock made a ton of money, janitor or manager.

Yes, they can, just ask the janitor who started out with Microsoft Co, back in the mid 80's.

I used to know a guy who was a short order cook, mostly breakfasts, who worked in a hotel. He was always on the phone for some reason or another. Now this guy looked like he had just come off of skid row. But that didn't matter because he never had to face the customer, and they never had to face him.

Anyway the reason he was always on the phone was that he was always in contact with his lawyer, accountant, or broker. He was, as they say, a 'wheeler dealer'.

A lot of these guys in service industries had these extra things going on. One of them was into 'property management', or what have you. I don't know how they did it but they seem to be living alright.

Live very simply and cheaply. Rent or buy the cheapest place. Work part time. Invest all of your money. If your employer contributes to a 401k, put your max in. It will take a while, but it will add up.
