Unions in the US have eroded, and unions in France are stronger. But unions in the US are not dead yet! The more companies like Viacom, Walmart push there employees around there will be a need for unions. (Those people need to unite!)

I think unions in France are more powerful than the Unions are now in the US.
How often do you see a nationwide strike in the us because somebody decided to open up trade on say -- oh, wine.
US unions - the powerful ones - don't have a whole lot of leverage anymore. UAW has squeezed too much blood out of the autocompanies. Teamsters are still strong but you don't hear as much from them either (as you did decades ago).

In France I have no idea. In the U.S. they have been seriously eroded, and that's a good thing since a union's primary goal is evidently to drive a company into bankruptcy with their ridiculous demands.

Still some clout , but erosion in US needs to stop.
Ret. union man but always thought there should'nt be a need for labor unions.
There is, & need is getting greater.
Union busting has become a sport for execs in this climate of corporate greed & here in US.
Not sure about French.
They seem to be able to shut down the whole country, not that its a good thing.
