most likely it is the return duct "popping" does the pop happen just about every time the fan kicks on? if so have your wife kick the fan on and off till you find the culprit piece of duct. when you find it, push it in and whack it with a hammer (lightly) until it doesn't pop back out.

Try this. Set the thermostat to a number high enough so that the heat will stay on for a long time without interruption. Observe whether the noises occur during that time (after, of course, the initial startup.)

If they don't, then it's likely the metal contraction making the sound. If you can observe the ducts, see if you can figure out where the problem is. It could be that the duct has been loosened a bit from a connection.

It could be the duct just rattling. If you can get some light angle made from something around 22 gauge galvanized. measure the width of the duct and screw a piece on the top and bottom between every joint that you can get at. Also make sure your room diffusers are not rattling

you might have a section of duct that wasnt welded properly the heat lets it expand but as it cools it "pops" out of place again if it continues ask a profesional to check it and find the ill section
