Because conservatives by nature are backward looking, and liberals are progressive or forward looking

Yes. Rather than working together to restore our nation to its former glory, American politicians of both sides of the spectrum just stick to the extremes of their respective ideologies. Neither side wants to agree that the other side has good ideas. Take social issues as an example. Conservatives have a good idea in pro-life; liberals have a good idea in gay marriage. Neither will concede to the other. The big issue today is economics, and economic ideologies. Conservatives wish to cling as far to the right as possible; they want everything to be totally laissez-faire. Liberals, on the other hand, are becoming more and more socialist. Both systems have their ups and downs, and it's painfully obvious to anyone who's put any effort into studying both ideologies, that it's best to combine the two, so that each other's pros cancel out each other's cons. Yet, neither side of the political spectrum wishes to admit this; everyone would much rather cling to their ideologies, rather than think of real-world solutions. Politicians are the new philosophers, sitting in their Ivory Towers, completely oblivious of the real world.

Here me out…
As I get older....I've begun to realize that Communism would be ideal (everyone is equal, no "keeping up with the Joneses" etc.) Then you factor in the human element, and all bets are off.
We are NOT all the same, that there really are bad people out there who want to take our property, livelihood, and sometimes our lives.
So for me personally, Liberalism is simply a lack of understanding the human condition. Nice ideas sometimes, but tough to follow through on.
A "Career criminal" is just that, a criminal who is pursuing his chosen vocation. It's sad, some people are like this, but true. So you can take all of the Liberal “hug a thug” programs, keep spending money on something that doesn’t work, and feel good about how you are trying to save these poor souls. The whole time, these Career types just love Liberalism, because they are really “getting over” on Society.
So the bottom line for me is being a Liberal may sound enlightened, but outside of that “perfect world”, it probably isn’t going to work.

The Liberal media make people believe that conservatives are backward thinkers when we aren't. How many entrepreneurs are conservative? And I sure wouldn't call an entrepreneur backwards thinking. They look at new ways of doing things and how to do things better.

Edit: I almost forgot, most Liberals believe in socialism versus capitalism. I feel we need to take the best of capitalism and the best of socialism and mix it together to make a better functioning society. The problem is we are starting to become to big to do that effectively without raising taxes to high. So the government should speak to the private sector about some of our social issues to find a better way of doing things.

So true. But it used to be the other way around. Thats the way of the world. Soon it will flip again and conservatism will be the in thing and Liberals will be considered morons (to everyone, not just the intelligent people).

Ha! It is just now that "liberal" has become an OK word. Since Reagan, "liberal" meant tax-and-spend, academic, socialist who doesn't care about real people. No one (who expected to be taken seriously in nationwide politics) would self-apply the liberal label. I think it's just after 12 years of GOP failures (which weren't really conservative failures, but Bush-like failures) that people can say "I want an increase in the minimum wage; I want to secure health care for most Americans; I want peace" and call themselves liberals now.

Upbeat? Refreshing? I don't know who you are talking to but I've never heard it referred to in that way. I have heard that it resembles socialism. I have also heard that the term pro-choice is just a catch phrase for a movement that murders unborn babies. That isn't too upbeat or refreshing. Try Pathetic.

Conservatives tend to look very seriously at issues and really try to drive their point home, sometimes in a critical way. Liberals tend to be more accepting of everyone and spin things in a more positive light.

I think conservatism has a lot of good points, and that liberalism should integrate them rather than resist them.

Liberalism is unsullied by facts, history, empirical evidence or the truth of human nature.

Conservatism is looked down upon because it is based on what has been proven to work for people and society. Human nature and reality are not very pretty.

Huh-- are you kidding? Liberalism has been turned into a dirty word by the cons.

Both have their supporters and detractors. And both ideologies have their pros and cons, good people and wackos.
