U don't need a RJ-45 socket for dialup! U need a RJ-11, a 56K modem. U can get a PCMCIA (PC card) modem on ebay.

for a dial up connection you dont need a rj 45 socket, you need rj 11. rj 45 is for ethernet (i.e. for dsl connections, or connecting two computers). you may need to get a usb adapter for an rj11. or go wireless (laptops are probably better wireless so you can move them around the house).

Dial up is RJ-10, almost all laptops have that port, it looks like (and really is) just a normal phone jack.

You can get a pcmcia modem card. Also all laptops have a PCMCIA card, that the large rectangle card with a lever or button next to it, that pops the card out.
