I need to transfer a very large file to another computer that is not on the same network. I can write a DVD, but I wonder if there is a more preferred way. I have tried to do a "Send File" from Yahoo Messenger, but it is really slow.

The best way I transfer large files from computer to computer is with one of little USB Flash drives. When you say large, I'm not sure how large you mean. My drive is 1GB. This is also assuming the two computers are near each other.

Depending on the file size, you may also be able to use a pen drive (aka thumb drive, flash drive, jump drive). This is a small device that plugs in to your USB port and acts like a small hard drive. You can get a low capacity (less than 200 MB) drive for about $15, and a 2GB drive for maybe around 40-60. The nice thing about these drives is that they are re-usable, reliable, and can often attach to your keychain for convenience.

DVD burning isn't a bad idea either, as it ensures that you will always have a copy of the file available, even if your computer fails. And DVD's are cheap. Burners are not as cheap as a pen drive though, so if you don't have the burner, go for the pen drive.

DVD is your best bet with a PC...unless you want to use yousendit.com or Pando.com but those can take long depending on your connection.

Or do like the last guy said, connect a ethernet cord to each create a personal network on the computer your transferring from and but the file(s) in the shared folder and access that shared folder from the other computer.

Get a USB thumb drive to copy the file onto, & use this free file splitter to cut the large file into segments (if it won't fit on the thumb drive) :

Free File Splitter 4.1.0075

You may also choose to split the file into small enough segments to be emailed individualed & then joined back together at the other PC.

I suggest that you make a free web site of your own and upload the file in to that site. Then it can be easily down loaded in to any other computer of your choice....! Microsoft (free domain and hosting for life) , Google (Googlepages, Blogger) , Yahoo (Geocities), Freewebs are some of the companies offering free websites with design tools . A list of free websites with features and links is available at http://tinyurl.com/lw7kp
