I think that word is very offensive because it is so closely related to slavery, oppresion and abuse suffered by men, women and children many years ago. The term ***** was what many slave owners called their slaves and that word warped into our current offensive.

The answer is simple........and mine will probably be deleted by the yahoo censors. Nobody wants to hurt the poor, enslaved feelings of any African Americans.........there.........I said it........I have no problem with members of the black community who have managed to get ahead in life.........I admire them.......they have had to work against a phenomenal amount of diversity to get there........things I can't imagine.........yet they had the personal drive to succeed..........they are by no means *******. Let's face it though, the number of single-parent, out of wedlock births is rising.......the number of HIV cases in the African-American population is rising...........the percentage of blacks in the American prison population is rising........And the sad thing is, The blacks who have worked beyond this never cry out........only the blacks who fit within the racist stereotypes ever complain............WHEN WILL THE THE MAJORITY OF THE AFREICAN AMERICAN POPULATION SCREAM FOR THE "*******" TO BEGAN ACTING LIKE HUMAN BEINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can't understand what acting like a human being means.......look in any metropolitan newspaper under what sort of gang related crap went down that day..........and do the opposite. If you've read this so far and you are grade A pissed off........good...........do something about it. You can flame me all you want or you can do everything you can do to change the stereotypes...........

I think that it is as offensive as any other racial slur. There just happens to be more publicity surrounding the "n" word than any other.

It's not more offensive than the others, but some people think it is because of the word's history. Any racial slur, whether it is directed toward blacks, whites, Hispanics, etc. is offensive.

That's a good question. All I know is that I am a white woman who has done a considerable amount of dating and anytime that word comes up...he's written out of MY book. I think having mixed race in your own family also does make a difference.

It goes back to the KKK and pre-Civil RIghts history. It was a common term used to demean Black Americans.
