Everything that everyone has suggested about making your new laptop is correct.
As for which kind of laptop, whatever features you're looking for, I highly suggest going with a Toshiba.
I've tried a lot of other brands and this one has lasted the longest.
Enjoy!

You need the HP nx6325 Windows XP Professional Edition AMD Turion X2 TL-52 1.6GHz Processor 80GB 1GB DVD-CDRW Drive 15SXGA Integrated Wireless Internet Bluetooth Enabled Notebook. You can pull it out of the box and it's ready to go.

The cheapest place to get it is at www.stupidcheapcomputers.net

All you need to connect to the internet, is a modem if you have cable, and a Wi-fi sending router. You'll have to buy both of those seperately unless your cable company sends you afree one if you are getting high-speed. Whent he wirless router is ste up your laptop should be able to automatically connect to it anywhere in the house.
