I was always told by "health people" to let the cold run through on its own. Medication usually tried to stop the dripping, which is just the body tryiing to get rid of that junk, so medication only stops the natural process.

No, medicine is not what a child need.
Give it vitamin C and maybe some honey that will be enough.
