There are no meters in the cabs, but there are official rate sheets that are sometimes observed.as Sharon said, ASK FIRST and be clear if its per person or the whole cab.......you can get badly surprised......for example at the airport, you ask for a cab to your hotel...you are told to go sit in a van.and you wait and wait until the van is full with people going in your general direction........you can have several stops and a 2 hour trip to get to a hotel 5 miles away.....now, if you want to have a cab by yourself and go directly there, its a charter.....and the 2 x $20 fee for a couple now is $200.....and the deal here is, if you refuse to pay, the driver calls the cops and they make you pay (or go to jail) and then you file a complaint with the Taxi Commission ....why is this? Simple: There's about 15,000 people who turn out to vote in any election. There are 2500 people in the taxi business. Which is all cash, by the way.
Do the math.

Best place for groceries is Food Center, near Red Hook on the East End. Marina Market in Red Hook is good, Plaza Extra in TuTu Park Mall is pretty good, Pueblo is for those with a sense of humor and strong stomachs.

Cab drivers will get whatever they can on St. Thomas, so be sure to ask first. Just asking will assure you get a better price. And be sure to ask if the price is per person or for your entire group. Sometimes they try to surprise you. Fare from the airport to downtown is about $10 - 15 per person, to the ferry at Red Hook is about $20.

Taxi Rates are set by the government and are per person, each way. So it's best to check with the driver before you get in the van.
