inorder for me to understand the game halo 3 which is yet to be sold do i need to play the first 2 inorder to?

Yes. Although you'll still be blown away by the awesomeness that is Halo 3, you need to know the story from Halo 1 and Halo 2 to understand all the little things, but you don't necessarily have to play them.
I highly recommend playing them though, the Halo series has one of the best storylines I've ever seen in a first-person shooter. And since you're going to have to buy an Xbox 360 for Halo 3 anyway (unless you already have one), why not buy both Halo 1 and Halo 2 as well (for about $20 together from most any game store)?
And yes, the first two can be played on Xbox 360. Halo 2 can also be played online with other Xbox players (you'll need an Xbox Live subscription for that - $50 a year = not much).

It helps to have played 1 and 2 but it isn't necessary. I beat Halo 2 before 1 and didn't have any trouble following the story but I understood the whole plot better once I was finished.
