If he wore a blue suit, he would be harder to see. An airplane would crash into him. Red also blends into walls in houses, so that he won't be seen by families.

Santa's suit is red because he needs to be seen, if the suit was blue, The air force could not track him on radar , Red color absorbs and he on the screen and , blue would reflect the radar and the planes could not see him.

The other answerer is right. Time to go into my weird mode. Santa Claus was a character created long ago. During the World War, Coca Cola, believe it or not, was going DOWN. So, they got devious and brought back the character of St. Nicholas--he was accented in red (coca cola colours) drinking Coke often. Customers were liking the idea and bought more.
