What they did -- pass a law affecting only one family which allowed them to bring a purely state claim in federal court for review -- was unconstitutional. But because debating its constitutionality would have dragged it on even longer, they dealt with the merits of the case, which was that the Florida law was ridiculously clear that a husband, not his wife's parents, hold the rights in question (it's that whole pesky "sanctity of marriage" thing a lot of people love to talk about).

Yes because in a federal system of government the governmental chain of command so to speak is:

1: the federal government
2: the state government
3: the parish or county government
4. the city or town government

Probably so. But that's beside the point. They latched onto something that was in the news and pulled a political stunt. They stuck their nose into something that they had no business doing.
