Because words can be very hurtful at times and can even last a life time. If the person that you are joking with knows that you are only playing around and didn't really mean it then the person isn't going to get so upset. You just have to be careful with the person who you are joking with and if that person can take negative joking or word calling.

The key to everything you just said is in this sentence "To me its just words to be played with". They may be just words to you, but sometimes there's a lot more to it than that. Sometimes people say things with every intention of hurting another person. I agree, political correctness CAN go too far, but there are some words that are sociallly unacceptable for a reason, often because they have a historical significance that goes far beyond just today. In the end, they are just words, but words can be very powerful.

Grow up! Live your life the way YOU want. Not what others say you should do. Tradition is a control device. Examine your morals, beliefs, views, traditions and ask yourself, "Is this me? Or is this society/history/family/books/T.V. telling me who I am?"
I heard once that words are the root of everything. Words are not the root of everything. Money is not the root of all evil. You are. I am. We are.
