Under the ribs on your right side? Could be your gall bladder. It's common for pregnant women to experience gall bladder pain, partly because of chemical changes due to pregnancy causing more activity, and partly because the baby is pressing your organs upward.
That last part caused us some confusion -- my wife had severe gall bladder problems with our last child, who was born ten years ago, and had to have an emergency procedure to remove a gallstone. But because the baby was pushing all her organs up into her chest, she perceived the gall bladder attack as happening up inside her ribs.
About two months ago she had severe right-side pain, but this was just at the bottom of the ribs or just below. We were sure it could NOT be gall-bladder symptoms because the pain was SO much lower than it had been when she last had them. It took us about a week of hospitalization to slap ourselves on the head and realize that the last time she had gallstones, there was a baby squeezing her guts up into her chest. :-) We've treated it as gall-bladder since then (no fried foods, limit fats and oils) and the pain has only recurred once -- after a nice greasy breakfast of sausage.
As a second opinion, my wife just looked over my shoulder, read your question, and said, "Yes, it's normal, the baby is pushing on her ribs. She should have pain EVERYWHERE." And I now recall that with baby #1, my wife would occasionally yelp and grab her side -- our first child liked to play kickball with my wife's lowest rib. "You could SEE my ribs popping out," she adds.
That kid just celebrated her 19th birthday last weekend and is doing well in college, and my wife is still here to remind me that sometimes the simple solution is the right one... so there appear to be no long-term negative effects of rib-kicking for either mother OR baby. :-)
Best of luck, and here's wishing you a smooth delivery!

I'm 8 months pregnant too, I just got this the other day! Turns out for me it was the uterine tendon cramping, like a charlie horse in my side. Hurt like hell! But then it went away and I was fine. I told my doctor yesterday and she gave me trouble for not coming in strait away, turns out that a sharp pain in the side of your uterius can be a sign of placenta abrubtion (placenta coming detached from the side of the uterine wall) and that is fatal in both baby and momma. She said that the pain will dull but not go away if this is the case so since my pain went away totally she's not concerned, but a trip to the maternity ward in your local hospital isn't an inconvienience to anybody and is suggested. They will do an ultrasound to make sure the placenta is ok.

Well it could be that the baby is just getting bigger and moving in different ways, or it could be more. You should inform your doctor of this, or if it persists or gets worse call them. They will, if nothing else, give you peace of mind.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem and it was just the baby kicking me. At times it hurt so bad I was in tears.
