Being the "best" driver doesn't necessarily mean the "winning" driver, does it? Michael didn't win the title in 2006, for example (I know what Michael haters are thinking about this statement).
It's the best package that wins the races...driver, tyres, engine, brakes, chassis, teamwork, strategy, luck etc... Alonso won the title because he had the best package. Put another driver in his seat and he would have done pretty well, I reckon. Ofcourse, Alonso and Kimi are exceptional drivers, and I would nominate one of them for your question just like everyone. Having said that, if we left out these two and the dead ones and Schumacher (Michael and....Ralf), Button is probably the next in line.....or could it be Rubens? Or DC? Or Webber? Speculations speculations...isn't it great?

It is either kimi or fernando alonso. It is hard to compare after last seaons because Kimi still had an unreliable car compared to Alonso. Next year will be very interesting with Schumacher out of the picture.

Alonso, no doubt about that. His driving style is much more mature that Raikkonen's, involving speed plus a great feel for machinery. He is famous for preserving his car while losing minimal time per lap.
Raikkonen's driving style can break, eventually, about any F1 car.
It will be interesting to see the skill levels that Hamilton and Kovalainen will have to prove next year, being in top-level teams. I'm confident that Heikki will do well, but I'm not so sure about Lewis.

I think Alonso is the best but Kimi will give him a close race next season.

Kimi or Alonso, just because Kimi did not challenge for the title, does not mean he is no good.
Both Kimi and Alonso are very very quick.
