My spouse and I did that once, agreed on not getting each other anything because we had bills that we needed to pay (it was a very tight year). In the end he ended up buying me a gift and I didn't get him anything, I ended up feeling lousy that I didn't get him something. So if you plan on doing a no gift thing, than you should both stick to it.
Since you're going away, you're going to spend money anyway on the trip, so why not get a small souvenir together to remember your trip it could be your present that you both share. Plus you can both pick it out and no one will have that lousy feeling for not giving a gift.

Offer to set a small limit on a gift ($25, $50, etc)
This way you both get a gift and dont have to worry about whether the other person will be surprising you.

My husband and I say this every year and every year he gets me something; so I've learned to buy a little gift for him and keep it hidden. If the day ever comes when he doesn't get me a gift at Christmas then I'll have it for another occasion.

That a hard one because someone always caves, and the other one is embarassed. (It happend to me during Valentine's Day one time.) Maybe you could say "I know wer're not doing presents this year, but I reallllly want to get you a little stocking". That way he's not caught off guard, or embarassed.

so stick to your arrangement of no gifts then.
instead why don't u plan a special night/holiday celebration for just the 2 of u ? like a nice dinner at home and a bottle of champagne to toast with or even just some snacks and a few cocktails together....you know...gaze at the holiday lights, into each others eyes and be in love.......................

I think if you BOTH decide to have a no gift xmas, it should be just that. Don't get him anything. He shouldn't be getting you anything since you BOTH agreed to have a no gift xmas.

I think it would be wise to sit him down and talk to him seriously about it. Telling him what you're thinking about the situation. Communication is always good to clear up a situation like that.

If you really wont get upset if he doesn't surprise you then go ahead and surprise them. it is gift enough to see the look on their face when they get an unexpected gift.
