You shouldn't give cereal in a bottle anyway. It should be given with a spoon. However fruits and veggies alone will be fine. He should do fine without the cereal.

I used to mix the rice cereal with apple juice or pear juice... my son loved it. Also, you can try the flavoured rice cereal (not sure if they're only a Canadian product?)-- they have berry flavour, apple, pear, etc... I wouldn't give him to much fruits and veggies on their own or with formula, because bananas, for example, can constipate babies, while oranges and apples can give them diarhea. So, try the flavoured rice cereal and see how it goes... I also just poked a slightly larger hole in the nipples of a few bottles, and mixed the rice cereal in with his bottles, and he LOVED it. Just make sure the hole in the nipple is big enough for the mixture to get thru, and that you are super careful and watch the baby while they drink the bottle (with cereal in it)-- it can get a bit goopy and thick.
Babies can be really picky, but if you keep trying and let him know you won't give up, he might just give in and eat it... good luck!

My son absolutely hated rice cereal - and who could blame him, it really stinks!!! So, I switched to oatmeal - he enjoyed it much more and feeding him no longer became an issue. Definitely don't mix the cereal in a bottle - mix it in a bowl with formula or breastmilk until it is really runny and let him get used to the consistency. Then you can gradually thicken it up - which by that time he will be ready for fruits and veggies. Definitely don't skip over the cereal to fruits and veggies - his tummy needs to get used to solid food, and the cereal is a gentle way to introduce solid food.

Have fun!

You son is smart! Processed rice cereal is nasty!

Your son doesn't need it at all! La Leche League among other organizations recommend grains be the LAST food introduced. First fruit and veggies, then meats, then grain. Meat and meat substitutes are important for the iron and zinc. Rice cereal has synthetic iron and zinc which is much harder for a baby to process.

If you *really* want to give him rice, make your own. Use brown rice, cook it with 2-3 times the water and simmer until it breaks down. You can then puree it further if you wish! Consider tossing some spices in too! My baby loves garlic and rosemary. Bland is just ICKY!

(No wonder north americans are carb addicts, we think we have to stuff infants full of them all the time!)

I also do child-led introduction to solids so I don't puree things, if you are interested:

You can give your son veggies right now. I give my son peas, carrots, greenbeand, squash, and sweet potatoes. My doctor said at 5 months I could feed him veggies. It is your baby, he has a diffrent taste that others. My son is the same, likes veggies, not too keen on cereal.
