I wouldnt know about Petersburg, but I did live for 4 years in Anchorage Alaska. My dad being in the Military. From time to time, we would travel up to Seward & Homer Alaska. It was quite the gorgeous experience. If you like to fish, then thats your haven. My dad bought a boat, and we would travel down to Seward, in the Ressurection Bay, and fish all day long.
It may be cold at times, but its durable. Just dress warmly, and it will be fun. I took up snowboarding while I was there. The snow activities are endless. Not to mention the wildlife, out your back door. I saw countless Moose, bear and eagles. Take a hike beside a creek and get a veiw of Salmon jumping up stream.
Alaska was a awesome experience. It just depends where you live, or build a house, when it comes to realstate cost. We lived in Eagle River, a town outside Anchorage. It was a nice home, didnt cost too much. Now if your looking at a log cabin, then thats when the money is $pent fast! (laugh)
Hope you have fun in Alaska!

Sad. Have you visited yet? This better be a great job offer. It is a little more unbearable than most towns in AK. Anchorage, Wasilla, Eagle River, Girdwood, Fairbanks are all great places to live. They are still somewhat considered "cities" (but are actually just large towns). Just be prepared for lots o' darkness!
