Blood has a lot of stuff in it. The 'water' answer above is quite wrong, as the medium that carries blood is actually something called plasma. Plasma is very interesting since it helps recuperate blood volume during severe blood-loss (assuming you can't get the right blood type on hand quick enough). On top of that, plasma can be donated to anybody from anybody - it's universal.

More than half of blood is plasma, a straw-colored liquid that is 92 percent water. The remaining eight percent of plasma contains more than 200 substances, including proteins, minerals, vitamins, sugar, fats and minerals that fight disease and act as chemical messengers.
