how do you diagnose computer problems on a 93 Ford Escort?

I know on some vehicles you can use a wire and hardwire the computer to make the check engine light flash to figure out the problem, but how do i do this on my escort.

The archetecture is either EEC-IV or OBD I, either way you should be able to take the vehicle to an autozone or O'Reily's. they will loan you for no charge a tester to read the codes. No need to search for the blinking light remedy. That is a pain as you can't tell when one code starts and the other ends.
