You can take the NJ Transit train from Penn Station (34th Street Station)- $11.50 (one way.Go to www.njtransit.com for the schedule to Trenton station (which is the last stop on the train). You can switch over to the R7 from Trenton station and take it to Market Street Station (8th- 11th & Market)- $7.00 (one way) go onto www.septa.org for the schedule. From there you can walk everywhere. City Hall, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Gallery Mall, etc. You will come out right in the heart of everything.

Greyhound Bus Lines! I've gone from Philly to NYC on a day trip before. It's fun and cheap, lol.
You can get Greyhound tickets for $12, $14, $28 round trip between Philly and New York, depending on the time of year and all that. I dunno where you'll be traveling from in New York, but I get off at the terminal on 42nd St in Manhattan, and the station in Philly in on 1001 Filbert St, in the heart of center city.
I can give you the specific details if Greyhound is something that you wanna do. Bus numbers, stations, addresses. I can give you directions around Philly, too, if you want! lol. I'd love to help. My e-mail is kokopelli86@gmail.com.

the best and easiest has to be Amtrak(non-stop)...the cheapest would be taking NJ Transit to Trenton, then hopping onto the R7 (septa) and taking it to Market East Station (thats closest to Old City)
that takes a few hours(maybe 2 at most), but its much cheaper.
NJ Transit and Amtrack both leave Penn Station in NYC.
Have fun, they are both great cities!!

Take a train into the city, faster, or a bus, cheaper. Go to PhilaTours.net- there are numerous tours you can take depending on what you prefer to see-- all reasonably priced. Have a good time- it's a great city- my daughter lives there and I love visiting her.
