Try to find out what kind of music they listen to or what kind of movies they like and put CDs or DVDs in them. You could also put nail polishes, makeup, perfume or hair accessories in the one for the girl. For the boy, maybe some cheap video games, matchbox cars, figurines or trading cards...basketball cards if he collects them maybe. You could maybe even get them gift cards to their favorite restaurant. Most kids like McDonalds. It will make them feel like little adults if they get to pay for their own meal with a gift card.

Christmas Pencils
Fun shaped erasers
Pencil supports that come in colors
double A batteries (for cd players and gameboys)
rubic's cube
8 year olds like that gross stuff called "ooze" that comes in a small tube and in different colors.
They also like yo-yo's and silly putty and slinky's (classic winners)

for the girl - lipgloss, cheapo jewelry, magazines, body spray, gloves, hat, CD
for the boy - a deck of cards, gloves, hat, hotwheels, trading cards (if he's into that), CD, magazines
I'll keep thinking and add more if I think of any. ;)
