I was just reading about this.
Iran's official position is that all of Palestine should be under Palestinian Arab rule (no Israeli government).
As another user pointed out, denying the Final Solution strengthens their position, as it is used by Israel to justify its existence.
To quote Juan Cole (Mid East expert):
Iran's farce of a "conference" on the Holocaust is a way of underlining its government's complete rejection of a two state solution and of a Zionist state in the Middle East. Iran's leaders support a maximalist Hamas vision of a fundamentalist Muslim Palestinian state in all of historical Palestine, which requires the dissolution of the Israeli state. Since Israelis tend to justify their state project with reference to the Holocaust, the Ahmadinejad faction in Iran is replying with Holocaust denial as a counter to this argument. Note that other prominent Iranians, such as former President Mohammad Khatami, accept the Holocaust and have lambasted Ahmadinejad for questioning it.

Who really cares? close to 14 million ppl died during the Holocaust, approx. 6 million Jews. It can't be denied. In Germany, it is against the law to deny the Holocaust, and if they feel that strongly about not letting idiots rewrite history, scre*w the rest of them. And God bless the Germans for accepting and acknowledging that it did occur. Ther is a similar thing going on in Darfur, right now, but it will be easier to wait 15 years and say" If we only knew, we could have done something. The Khymer Rouge under POl Pot had their killing fields in Cambodia , and it was Vietnam that intervened and put a stop to that. We in the west not only knew about Indonesia committing Genocide in East Timor, we sold them the weapons to do it. It was the Aussies that finally brought that to an end. Romeo Daillaire , the Canadian Gen.in charge of peace keeping in Ruwanda, begged for more troops because he saw that genocide starting. Still smarting from Somalia, Clinton advised that the US oppossed changing the UN mandate. Over 800,000. died. It destroyed Daillaire and when he returned to Canada, attempted to take his own life. Fortunately, with help he has to a degree, recovered & was appointed a senator for life, by the Can. Gov. His main concern is trying to help child victims of war . When Clinton attended the 10th anniversary ceremonies, he had the nerve to imply that he had been unaware of the tragedy as it was unfolding.

One of the reasons that the State of Israel was supported by Western powers was due to guilt over the Holocaust. If Iran can convince enough people that it never happened, I think they believe it will help them in their cause to destroy Israel

It gains them political allies at the extreme fringe, stirs up others in the Arab world, and for millions of the poor and displaced, takes their minds off the miserable conditions under which they live. So they momentarily focus their anger (again) on the West instead of their own corrupt governments.

With such a religiously-motivated population, anything that could put doubt into the integrity of the West is something that could help Ahmadinejad's cause.
