It's probably a good idea to start with something small, and with a short period of waiting, then progressively increase the stakes. Isn't 'delayed gratification' one evidence of maturity? That could be the carrot to entice one to perservere.
It never hurts to use the mantra, "it's not leaving the planet, I can have it later".

Yes- and practice.
There is one young lady I used to know who would get a hold of a little money and absolutely HAVE to spend it right away. It didn't even have to be on any thing good, as long as she bought something. But then she grew up, and found out that real life doesn't work like she thought it did when she was a kid. She is now actually learning to save so she can buy something nice.
