They need the telephone line so that they can check your card is valid !

To process a credit card there must be some type of communication system (DSL, Cable, telephone dial, satelitte).

When a card is swiped the information goes to your issuing bank to check on the balance and approve the transaction. Has to happen that way.

That is purely down to the Bank that you got the credit card from and the matter of their telephone line. Have a word with your bank.
