When I boot up, a password screen appears as soon as the Gateway logo apears. Cannot get any further. No way to recover the password from the young child. We are pretty sure he just punched in random letters/numbers. Have tried entering BIOS, also tried booting in safe mode, but both require the password first. Any suggestions?

More info: All your advice so far would be valid . . . if I could get past the logo screen. The password is not on the hard drive . . . it's before that. I've replaced the hard drive, but I still get the password screen as soon as the Gateway screen appears. This tells me the password has been added to the initial computer memory, not the hard drive. I've removed the mobo battery, but that didn't help either. Apparently resetting the BIOS does not delete the password. Not sure what op sys the machine has (I'm guessing Win98), but I don't think this is relevant since the password affects initial boot, not Windows boot.

More info: I apologize to YourDream for questioning his advice. Although removing the CMOS battery did not work the first time I tried it, I repeated the process and left everything unplugged for half an hour. When I put the battery back in and booted up . . . the password screen was gone. Good job. Thanks for your fast and excellent tech advice. I have to wait four hours to rate your answer best, but I will do that ASAP.
