My limited understanding of why there is so much fighting, is that:

a) There are a few places, like Jerusalem, that have historic and religious significance to all three religions.

b) The fighting over these areas are about who own the sites.

Now if this is in fact the case, and I'm no expert, could these sites not be set up as countries themselves? Like the Vatican? These "countries" could be run by a leader (or leaders) from each religion, sort of like a Triumvirate of ancient Rome. That way, the sacred sites would be owned by everyone that lays claim to it.

Wouldn't it be cool if Yahoo Answers actualy solves the problems of the Middle East. A problem solved by the citizens of the planet rather than the politicians?

Just throwing that one out there.

Thanks for the answers so far but it seems that some of you, and i won't name Alex B...ooops I just did, didn't read the entire question. I will repeat that this "country" would be run by ALL THREE religions, not one.

As far as "Muslims not wanting Israel to exist", I disagree. I'm sure there are "some" Muslims that feel that way, but a great majority feel that Israel has a right to exist.

Mohammed in Sura 5:21 quotes Moses telling the Jews to "enter into the holy land which Allah has assigned to you". While Mohammed later criticizes the Jews for their sins and their refusal to accept Mohammed's message, he never says that, as punishment, Allah has revoked their title to the land. Hence the title still stands, and Muslim anti-Zionists are apostates.

And I know that there are arguments about the Jews not being the ones mentioned in the Qur·'an and blah blah blah...but that is not the point. Suffice it to say that all three religions have legitimate claims the the holy sites and leave it at that. That is why I say have all three religions govern the new "country". That way, neither the Jews, Christians or Muslims would "own" them.

I have no religious ties at all...just sick of all the killing

Thanks for the answer Americanmade. I'm not suggesting making the whole country of Israel shared by all religions, just the holy sites. BTW I'm not american so I'm not sure what the NAACP is but I do know what the KKK is. I would hardly equate the legitimacy of the KKK as a religious group accepted by the majority of the world. It's hard to argue that Muslims, Jews and Christians have no right to exist, but easy to argue why KKK should not. Furthermore, I agree with you that killing for religion is insane. Not sure who said it (Yasar Arafat perhaps?) but I heard a quote from an Arab leader that said: "Fighting over religion is like killing someone over who has the best imaginary friend". Sorry if I quoted wrong, but I'm going off memory.

First of all, I'm a Christian. Just getting that done right now.

Second of all, I think that every human being has a right to exist. God put them here for a reason, even if nobody knows what exactly that reason is!

Third of all, in the Bible (which was written before the Qu'ran by the people who experienced it) it says that Moses said "Enter into the land that GOD has prepared for us". Sorry if not an exact quote, there. ALLAH is not mentioned in the Bible.

Third of all, most Christians (most...not saying some aren't a little too out there against other religions) would not fight back if we weren't already being picked at and put down by other religions. There are still some left that do not hate other religions, including myself.

Why some people think that religion is something to cause wars about? I have no idea.

Not trying to be a smart *** but that would be like asking the NCAA to share a building with the KKK. You see they don't now nor have they ever liked each other. They believe that their religion is the only true one. They are fanatic about it. In the united states there is a certain amount of tolerance of other religions but not over there. They will never share or recognize another religion. Than again how would you like it if since north and south America are connected by land we make it all one country? we could fly the Canadian or Mexico's flag over the white house. But yeah killing in the name of religion is a very sad thing.

It was with the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem in the 10th century BCE that Jerusalem became the central city of Judaism.
Christianity, which is a continuation of Judaism, adheres to Jerusalem both because of its Jewish roots, and also because they believe that this is the main scene of the acts of Jesus and the ground where he was crucified.
In Islam, Jerusalem's importance is due to a tradition saying that Muhammad went on a celestial journey from the spot where the ruins of the Jewish temples was and where the Dome of the Rock later was erected. But Islam also adheres to Jerusalem because it claims to be the true version of Judaism and Christianity, hence both the Jewish temple and the life of Jesus is theoretically a part of the history of the religion of Islam. But the latter reason is strained in modern times, when Muslim leaders have focused on emphasizing the distance between Islam on one side and Judaism and Christianity on the other.

There are many reasons that the Muslims and Jews are fighting... one though, wouldnt be settled with Vatican-like cities and that is Solomons Temple vs the Dome of the Rock. Solomons Temple is the crux of Jewish history and where they were to give their sacrifices, it was destroyed in 70 AD and only the retaining wall (Wailing wall) remains. On the mount now, stands the Dome of the Rock... the center of Islam. Who would get that? The Christians want the Temple to be rebuilt also as this is prophecied to happen before Jesus returns. That particular peice of land cannot be fairly divided.

Shias are Muslim. they does no longer opt for to harm themselves. As for Christians and Jews, there is a lot of bigotry and hate between religions, yet no longer on a point of huge adequate administration (aka government) to take over the midsection East.

The problem with establishing, for example, Jerusalem as its own country, like the Vatican, is that unlike the Vatican, which is Roman Catholic, Jerusalem has all 3 religions laying claim to it. No one religious group could lay claim to it, for the other two would get getting the shaft, so to speak

I'm sorry, but that is not why there is so much fighting in the mid east. What was happening in Nazi Germany in the 1930's with the indoctrination of people into believing that jews were animals and needed to be killed etc. is happening now and has been for a long time all throughout the mid east.

It is pure racism.

War is caused not by these petty religious difference, espeically of holy people who ask other to accept the burden of injustice, but rather to correct the indignance and disrespect which is deep rooted. It is about proud predjudice and oppression of the poor.

Won't work. You have an inaccurate understand of the situation. The crux of the matter is that Muslims don't want Israel to exist. They also aren't very happy about Christians living in "their" part of the world. There is no room to compromise.
