Boxing day originated from the Royals. They would box up all their leftover food and gifts the day after Christmas and give them to the servants and the poor.

Now, boxing day is the biggest shopping day of the year in Canada. They have the biggest sales. So, lots of people wait to go christmas shopping for clothes for their kids until boxing day.

While visiting Canada, I asked the same question. Boxing Day is the day people returns to the local stores and buys gifts for the kids in Foster Homes, or homeless children.

So this is what I was told when I lived in Canada ... Dec 25 is Christmas and rich people would have big parties so they would need their servants to work. So on the following day the rich people would make it up to them by giving them gifts and serving them for a day.

Well, It was when people boxed up all of their extra food to give it to the poor. It is also celebrated in the UK and some people celebrate it in America.

Actual version....Goes back to a time when servants and their employers would switch places for the day .
My version.... it's the day after Christmas you box up all the stuff you don't want and return it to the store!!!
