I own a restaurant and I pay my dishwashers above minimum wage. They wash dishes, pots, pans and perform other duties such as sweep, mop, trash removal, restroom cleaning....

This is actually one of the most demanding, and demeaning, jobs in a restaurant. Pay them $8 an hour, and they will be more likely to stick around. A good utility person, such as dish help, cause they do so much, is invaluable, and can hold a place together on a busy night.

The answer to that question requires further info:

1) Is your restaurant in a big city like New York or in a smaller town like Boise, Idaho? The restaurant staff pay will differ based on how much demand there is for these people in the town. Places like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles will usually offer much better pay and even benefits than elsewhere.

2) How many stars does your restaurant have? A four star restaurant in a classy part of town will demand better quality of service from its staff, but they also pay better.

3) How much employee turnover are you looking for? If you find a dishwasher that is skilled in other areas, (such as filling in for an absent sous-chef, or acting as a waiter) should be offered a better pay in order to try and retain them and avoid them walking out to try and find a better paying position elsewhere.

I'm not sure if "dishwasher" is available as a category on Monster.com, but you can certainly look at the pay scale for similar jobs by looking at the Restaurants category for your area.

No one can really survive on minimum wage anyway...if they are reliable, responsible, and good workers pay them well above minimum wage. You want to keep and attract good workers, right?
