The regular TV season runs from the end of September to the end of May, roughly 8 months or 32 weeks. A full season order for a one-hour drama is about 22 to 26 episodes.
Some shows -- like "24" -- delay the start of their season until January so they can go straight through with no repeats. Other shows -- like "Prison Break" and "Lost" do two mini-seasons with a planned break in between. Most shows, however, like "Grey's Anatomy" have to air repeats to make up for other shows that didn't succeed, to keep the time slot warm, to attract new viewers who missed them the first time around.
December and early January is the perfect time to put a show on hiatus since November sweeps are over and people are watching less TV anyways due to the holidays.

It' not over. But it would be nice if they would actually show a semi-full "season" of new shows instead of the "new, repeat, repeat, new, repeat, repeat" two step like they are doing now. It is the #1 show on TV, but it won't stay that way long if they keep pissing people off.

No, they are taking the classic "holiday break". Other show do that too, such as Desperate Housewives, Prison Break, etc.

Don't know, since I don't watch it, but if you missed anything, the Lifetime Channel is going to start carrying it, right from the beginning....
