Israel is considered to be in southwest Asia because the dividing line between Europe and Asia is considered to be the Ural Mountains (which is why Russia is both European and Asian). The division between Africa and Asia is considered to be the eastern end of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula (which Israel held from 1967 to 1979, making it the second country to straddle two continents).
