Does anyone really ask out of interest?

Some people just do it because they feel obligated, I think. They want to be nice, but it doesn't matter to them what the answer is. I get a lot of that here at college.

Yes don't worry, people do ask out of interest. The how are you you refer to is a sort of hello. It's interesting what you say, and I really understand what you mean. I think it's special friends that are really interested in how you actually are. They are the ones that we should not reject, and remember that sometimes when they ask how we are they are tired or poorly and are really saying 'ask me how i am'.

Some people just ask out of habbit. I'm a cashier and i do it out of habbit and i think some of my customers do it too(and some are regulars). But some don't expect an answer out of you. Thats why some just say "fine" or "good" instead of a sit down conversation of 'how are you'.

Cause its another way of saying hello.......and they really dont care. If someone walks by and asks "how are you" jus say fine, dont go into how youre sad cause your cat died. Theyre only doing it out of manners. Which is a good thing, its something a lot of people lack.

Because 'How are you' is just what people say out of politeness/way of life, they don't actually care how we are. Its the new Hello!
Its wrong say what you mean people, if you don't care don't ask !!

Its even worse when you ask the question and they walk by without answering!

it is simply common courtesy. it is better than simply saying 'hello' but it does not require an actual answer as the person asking usuallu doesn't care to hear the answer.

This is a way of acknowledging someone without having to actually confront them.

But when you answer in a negative way, how shocked are they? Try it, tell them how miserable or ill you've been and they won't ask again :-)
