Why does the PS3 sell for $600 and include a blue ray player when a stand alone blue ray player is around $1k? Will the prices ever come down (it seems they would have to)? When?

While Blu Ray touts a larger capacity (which might be better for computers) that does not translate to better image quality or better sound...

From all the reviews I've read to date, HD-DVD is leading the pack in overall image quality.

Although both have their quirks, like long start up times and buggy firmware.

I'm not sure that either format is worth buying for movies at this point. I'm not that confident that the public is willing to spend a significant amount of money to basically upgrage from their already very good quality DVD players. Perhaps when the price of both the players and teh discs comes down and it's clear who the winner of the war is people will buy in. If you ask me this smells a lot like Mini Discs and DCC (Digital compact cassette)...two formats that were better than their counterparts but just came out at the wrong time and we're in the end replaced by a better format: CD-R.

Look out for Holographic Discs coming out in a year or so...100gb+ storage...that may be the winner....

I would say Blu-Ray is the better technology, but for movies, there is a ceiling of quality I would imagine and one would compare to the other. I voted for Blu-Ray for the storage abilities on computers. Each disc is like a hard drive. That's awesome!

Blu Ray is (i believe) Sony Technology. Blue ray holds upto 50 gigs which is a lot of space which allows a lot of things to be stored in there. That is why Blu-Ray is better
