The files need to be associated. Right click on any file, and choose properties or open with. Choose the Word or Excel program you open with. It will then associate the file with the program.

It would depend on the message you are getting.

If it does not have an icon, then Windows does not know what to do with the file. You can right-click on one of them, select Open With, and then open it up with Excel or Word, whichever is appropriate.

If it has the icon, your Office programs may be corrupt. I would consider going to Microsoft Update and downloading the latest service packs for the version of Excel or Word you have.

If it worked all the way up to yesterday, I would consider checking for viruses with McAfee, Norton, whichever. There are some free virus protection software on the internet if you do not have one. Also, you may want to check for SpyWare trying to view all of your activity before opening up your document. There are two programs I always keep handy on my PCs or laptops. They are Spybot 1.4 and Hijack This!. One will check for spyware on your system and the other will show you what is set to run when you enter Windows and/or Internet Explorer. They will then give you the chance to remove these spyware entries or windows startup entries, respectively. They are both very simple (intuitive) to install.
