We usually buy a few extra inexpensive gifts for kids that age, just in case there are some that show up unexpectedly (cousin's kids, neighbors, etc) I always have Christmas coloring books, story books with pictures, color-forms, play dough, puzzles with large pieces and bright pictures help with hand eye coord., and problem solving skills. Small cars (esp. unusual ones - I bought some hot wheels once that had the Oscar Meyer Wiener Mobile on it, (my nephews loved them as much as their big gifts) and then you can always find a police car, ambulance, or fire truck) For girls Barbies accessories are popular if they are into that. Small stuffed animals from the Dollar store are also popular with either sex.
