I'm pretty sure that no passport is needed. You just need to make sure you bring a pic ID with you so you can come back. If you can bring other forms of ID that will help aswell

You will be required at the first of the year to provide a passport when going to Mexico and Canada.

Not yet... but you soon will. Either next year or '08. There is currently a large rush on passports so I suspect it is next year.
BUT its not a bad idea to have one. ESPECIALLY if you even remotely appear hispanic or middle eastern.
