Hi, im a landscape architecture student and im now doing my project design. My question is, is it possible to plant carpet grass vertically? i know there are vertical planting using the 'cells' but they are mostly to plant shrubs, never grass. In my project, I want to create steps, but all around the surface (all the threads and risers of each step) I want to use grass. I have been searching everywhere to find information about this and I thought I should seek advice or help from experienced landscape architects or horticulturalists.

by the way, I also wonder if carpet grass (axonopus fissifolius) is shade tolerant. In my design project, Im going to use carpet grass under a viewing tower-like structure measuring height of around 3 metres and a circular viewing platform of 7 metres of diameter. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thankyou in advance. regards.

It sounds like a neat idea, but I have my doubts.

See if you can do a little sample plot at home.

Would you be willing to substitute moss for grass? It of course depends on the climate, but it's shade tolerant, will grow slowly, and can cling veritcally. Plus, there are several varieties to choose from. The big issue would be keeping it moist.

You can try using sod on your steps. Sure would be a pain in the patoot to keep trimmed though.
