I have noticed that in the United States, the letter U is left out of colour, valour, etc. So why is it that they keep the U in glamour?

Ta SGT for the US/UK differences. :) I was raised with the UK. I'm simply curious as to that particular word: glamour.

These changes were made to the English langauge for reasons just of simplification. The new ways to spell are more exact to the pronunciation. There is some society in America that also wants to simplify the entire language and make all words spelled the way they are written.

Actually, it goes far beyond your example:

AMERICAN_______________BRITISH

canceled, traveled___________ cancelled, travelled
color, humor________________colour, humour
judgment___________________ judgement
check _____________________ cheque
realize,apologize _____________realise, apologise
defense_____________________ defence
anemia, anethetic_____________anaemia, anesthetic
theater, center_______________ theatre, centre
fetus ______________________foetus
mold, smolder ______________ mould smoulder
civilization ___________________ civilisation

I can't explain why everything is different. It just is what it is.
